Rival (Romeo Santos & Mario Domm Cover) CRATB

Rival was a CRATB cover of Romeo Santos’s 2011 song featuring Mario Domm. Charlie Rivera sang Santos’s part, and Ezra Cruz sang Domm’s part.

Compositional Context

Anthony “Romeo” Santos and Mario Domm wrote the original song, which appeared on Santos’s 2011 album ‘’Fórmula, Vol. 1’‘. The two vocal parts described a romantic relationship that had become adversarial rather than two men competing for the same lover.

Charlie recorded the cover because he loved the song and admired Santos’s work. The project was an early occasion when Charlie treated his singing voice as part of CRATB’s recorded work rather than leaving the group’s Spanish-language lead vocals primarily to Ezra.

Recordings

CRATB recorded a studio version around 2029. Charlie and Ezra supplied the two vocal parts, with Jacob Keller on keyboard and Riley Mercer on guitar. The band also performed the cover live.
